Sizing Guidelines

  • A common rule of thumb is 4 to 6 cubic feet of total fridge space per adult.
  • Add 2 to 4 cubic feet if you cook at home often, buy in bulk or entertain.
  • Count children as roughly half an adult until their teens.
  • Measure the opening (width, height, depth) and the path into the kitchen, including doorways.
  • French-door and side-by-side models need room for the doors to swing open fully; check the door swing in the spec sheet.

Typical clearances for airflow: about 0.125 in on each side, 1 in on top and 1 in at the back. Always check the installation guide for your model, which takes priority.

A new refrigerator in the wrong space runs hot and wears out early. If yours is struggling to keep cold, see our Refrigerator repair page.
